The following is a Press Release, dated October 11:
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
The Town of Nantucket has announced the 2018 July Fourth celebration calendar of events.
The Department of Culture and Tourism will host the traditional Main Street activities on Wednesday, July 4th beginning at 10 a.m. and culminating with the water fight between Town of Nantucket’s Fire Department and the Boynton Lane Reserves at HIGH NOON!
Children’s Beach games (potato sack races, three legged races, wheel barrow races and tug-of-war) will begin at 5 p.m. The Balloon Wizard will be on the lawn. At 6 p.m., there will be music on the bandstand.
The Fireworks Display will be held on Thursday, July 5th at 9 p.m. on Jetties Beach. Rain/ weather date is Friday, July 6th. Again this year, the Department of Culture and Tourism and the Town of Nantucket are asking those individuals who would like to participate in the water fight to LEAVE WATER BALLOONS at home. Shards from the water balloons litter the cobblestone streetscape and enter the harbor. Last year, volunteers and DPW staff logged in many hours to clean up balloon shards over two days. Once the shards are in the harbor, they are consumed by aquatic life. Like you, we prefer our Nantucket Bay Scallops without a "side of balloon." Thank you for leaving the water balloons at home.
