Green Community Investments Coming Soon!

In March, Nantucket was designated a Massachusetts Green Community, joining 271 other Green Communities in Massachusetts.

The Town achieved this designation by fulfilling five criteria demonstrating a commitment to reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, including:

  • Producing a plan to reduce municipal energy use by 20 percent over 5 years
  • Designating the landfill as a solar-by-right overlay district with expedited permitting
  • Approving a fuel-efficient vehicle purchasing policy for municipal vehicles, and
  • Adoption of the more stringent Energy Stretch Code at the 2019 Annual Town Meeting

As a result of this designation, the Town received an initial grant of $139,340 to be used toward cleaner energy solutions for the island.  On August 19th, the Select Board approved the contracts for several Green Communities grant-funded projects, including an installation of a new, high-efficiency HVAC system at the Visitor Center building on Federal Street and new public Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations at various municipal sites, including:

  • Town Lot on Washington Street
  • Nantucket Memorial Airport
  • Public Safety Facility

Between the Green Community grant funding and pre-approved National Grid rebates, the Town is receiving over $207,000 in equipment upgrades, software, and extended warranties, covering 99.6% of the total project costs.  Project installations are slated for this month.
